With the assistance of the Phoenix Police Athletic Club, The Phoenix Force ice hockey team traveled to Las Vegas on June 4th - 7th to participate in the 2009 Guns and Hoses Summer Heat hockey tournament hosted by Las Vegas Police Metro Officers and Firefighters. The eight-team, two-bracket tournament benefited the Children's Tumor Foundation of Las Vegas.
After an initial loss to the team from Nellis Air Force Base, the Phoenix Force team came back with two consecutive wins in their bracket by beating teams from Portland and the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. This launched the Force into the finals with a 2-1 record; facing the now undefeated Nellis Air Force team for the trophy.
The score remained close throughout the final game until late in the third period when Nellis jumped out to a 5-3 lead. With only a few minutes left in the game, the Force team was able to muster up three quick goals to take and hold a 6-5 lead. The game ended with the Force winning and taking home the trophy for their bracket.
Plans are currently underway for the team to participate in more tournaments in the coming months. If any hockey player is interested in playing with the PPAC team, please contact Darrell Smith at misterhockey@cox.net
